Celebrities Known to Use Dating Apps Like Tinder and OkCupid

These 19 Celebrities Swipe Right and Left Like You and Me

Long gone are the days where online dating was a stigmatized thing reserved for socially awkward dorks and shy loners. These days, it seems like everyone is on at least one app, site or platform — single people, non-monogamous people, coupled-up people looking for side action, and couples themselves looking for a third.

The rich and famous are no different, and while they may have more people lining up to pay attention to them IRL, that’s no reason they can also find love via digital means. Of course, their celebrity status doesn’t mean it’s exactly easy. For one, many people would have trouble believing they were coming across a celeb’s real account and not a scam or catfish attempt, and two, dating an average person when you’re famous can be a real headache for both parties, no matter their personal compatibility.

This, of course, means that most celebs who engage in online dating do so via apps that are tailored to their high-class situations. These days, that often means Raya, an app whose very reason for being seems to be so Hollywood actors can have something to swipe on. But every now and then, a bona fide celeb tries out an app meant for the rest of us.

Here’s a look at some noteworthy famous swipers of the past few years:

Celebrities Who Use Dating Apps

Zac Efron

With a winning smile, washboard abs and a legion of no-longer-teenaged High School Musical stans after him, you’d have to guess Zac Efron would clean up on any normal dating app. However, his early experiences on Tinder were apparently a bust with people reporting his real profile was a fake.

Khloe Kardashian

Khloe is far from the most famous member of her family, but she’s still a pretty regular tabloid and gossip blog presence, in no small part due to her love life. With that said, it’s a bit shocking to learn that she’s willing to wade through the weeds of online dating — or at least she was a while back. Rumor has it she had her very own OkCupid profile in 2016.

Channing Tatum

The star of the Step Up and Magic Mike franchises has made a comfortable living for himself playing a lovable goofball who can grind hard on screen, but also as someone who’s very much at home with working class people. It’s a little disappointing to report that Tatum is known primarily for his Raya usage rather than something like Tinder or Bumble, but according to at least one source, his Raya bio states that he did, indeed, use to work as a stripper.

Lizzo

Lizzo’s songs frequently refer to being mistreated in love by sub-par partners. It’s hardly surprising to hear she’s not new to the dating app life, then. She reportedly joined Raya in 2019 looking to match with John Mayer, but apparently that did not happen. Chris Evans, however, did respond to a drunken Instagram DM slide, so she’s doing something right!

Charlize Theron

The South African actress as well known for her beauty as for her talent doesn’t exactly feel like dating app material. Surely there’s dozens if not hundreds of guys she knows who would drop everything to date her, right? But at the advice of pal Chelsea Handler, she admitted to trying out Tinder in a 2017 interview, even though she reportedly didn’t love the app experience.

Ben Affleck

When Brad Pitt joked about having a Tinder profile in his victory speech for Best Supporting Actor back in 2020, it seemed pretty laughable. But for Ben Affleck, one of his counterparts that pops into your brain when envisioning a depiction of A-list masculinity, crafting an online dating profile isn’t that far-fetched of an idea. Affleck fessed up to having a Raya profile on Instagram after the press reported on it in 2019.

Laverne Cox

Swiping around on online dating apps can be fraught for trans people, but Laverne Cox, activist and star of Netflix’s hit female prison drama Orange Is the New Black, described herself as a “Tinder girl” in 2019. Some sources have even gone on to speculate that she met a serious partner on the app.

Amy Schumer

Prior to marrying husband Chris Fischer, stand-up comedian and all-around hilarious actress Amy Schumer reportedly dated a furniture designer — Ben Hanisch, if you’d like to Google him — she met on Raya.

KJ Apa

The star of Riverdale may play a teeny bop heartthrob on the show, but he’s old enough to use a dating app. In his case, he tried one out for a good cause, getting a Bumble account in order to award a date doing volunteer work for the ASPCA with him to one lucky Bumbler (plus a donation of $50,000 to the organization, too).

Demi Lovato

Dating apps often have a very binary approach to gender and sexuality, which can make things awkward for queer people (famous or otherwise). But prior to coming out as non-binary, Demi Lovato apparently used Raya after their breakup from Wilmer Valderrama, and said the app led to some decent dates that even turned into friendships.

Simone Biles

Simone Biles is inarguably the most talented, and certainly the most decorated, gymnast of all time. It’s hard to know how to approach someone like that on a dating app, and one assumes there have been some bad openers about her flexibility. But Biles found love with a fellow athlete on Raya in the form of Houston Texans NFLer Jonathan Owens, who reportedly had never heard of Biles before when they matched.

Niall Horan

Formerly one-fifth of the British pop group One Direction, Horan was reportedly sighted on Raya in 2018, not long after rumors of a breakup had hit the net. Luckily, Raya doesn’t allow users to take screenshots, otherwise pictures of his profile and messages would likely be all over the pages of various UK tabloids.

Katy Perry

What? Really? Yes, that Katy Perry has used dating apps. In 2014, between her marriage to Russell Brand and her engagement with Orlando Bloom, she claimed to be “really deep on Tinder,” although, as it is for many people, it doesn’t sound like anything significant came of it. Stars: they’re just like us!

Adam Rippon

Though people tend to think of Tinder as a “straight app” and Grindr as the go-to spot for gay guys, this is a truly heartwarming tale — U.S. Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon met his now fiancee on Tinder in 2018.

Joe Jonas

The handsomest of the Jonas Brothers finally settled down and married like his sibling bandmates Nick and Kevin, shacking up with Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner — but not before trying out Raya, according to some reports.

Paul Mescal

The star of the hit TV show Normal People, Paul Mescal’s disarming charm, sculpted body and Irish accent would be likely to cause problems on just about any normal dating app, so it’s a good thing he seems to primarily use Raya. He’s recently been linked to up-and-coming rock star Phoebe Bridgers, although it’s not clear if they met on a type of dating service or if it was a naturally made IRL connection.

Tiffany Haddish

Comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish opened up about her experiences with online dating on The Tonight Show in 2018. While she didn’t specify any app in particular, Haddish did suggest online dating as a great way to meet underwhelming men who were far less impressive than their profiles would suggest. Harsh! But… fair.

Sharon Stone

As an ‘80s icon and continuing glam dame of Hollywood, Sharon Stone gave Bumble a whirl only to have her profile bounced because too many people reported it as a fake. While it was allegedly reinstated, it was too late as Stone claimed to be through with online dating entirely.

Sam Smith

Singer and non-binary icon Sam Smith has apparently given the dating app Hinge a try, but reportedly was kicked off the app because it was assumed they were a catfish rather than the real deal. Being a celeb comes with a distinct set of problems, particularly when it comes to finding your perfect match through a phone screen.
